CELEBRATIONS IN JAPAN: Funa fish day

 

Today, February 7 is the Day of the Funa (Funa no Hi) the Funa fish is a type of carp of the cyprinidae family. It is freshwater and is primarily a fish for aquariums and ponds.

In various places in Asia they are used in cooking. In Japan, at various schools in the city of Koga in Ibaraki, a dish with this fish is served during lunch in Funa Day. Last year, 4,300 lunches were served at 10 high schools in the city. Ibaraki is the third largest producer of Funa in Japan.
